Introducing Hydrafacial the newest service at Skin Care by Angelique!

Say goodbye to fine lines, wrinkles, uneven texture, and hyperpigmentation. Our Hydrafacial Treatment is here to address all your skin care needs, from dry, flaky skin to oily, congested pores. With noticeable results from the very first session, regular treatments will keep your skin looking and feeling its best. So why wait? Give your skin the love and care it deserves with Hydrafacial!

What is HydraFacial?

Hydrafacial is an invigorating treatment that can be given in as little as 30 minutes. It delivers long-term skin health and can be tailored to meet the specific needs of all skin types. It offers instant, noticeable results with no downtime or irritation. The Hydrafacial treatment removes dead skin cells and extracts impurities while simultaneously bathing the new skin with cleansing, hydrating and moisturizing serums. The treatment is soothing, refreshing, non-irritating and immediately effective.

Why is Hydrafacial good for my skin?

Hydration is the foundation of healthy, radiant skin. Irritation of the skin has been proven to increase signs of aging. Hydrafacial is a hydrating and non-irritating treatment.

Am I a candidate for this treatment?

The Hydrafacial treatment is designed for all skin types. Even the most sensitive skin easily tolerates the Hydrafacial treatment. Your skincare professional may choose specific treatment serums and/or customize the treatment for your unique skin conditions and needs. Consult your skincare professional for a skin evaluation and sensitivity test.

How long does the treatment take? Is there any downtime or pain involved?

Our goal is to help support you in a balanced lifestyle. That’s why Hydrafacial is a fast, efficient treatment that takes as little as 30 minutes. You may put on makeup and return to your normal activities right after the treatment since there is no downtime.

What results may be expected? How many treatments are needed to see results? How long do the results last?

Many clients report seeing visible skin refinement and an even, radiant skin tone after just one treatment. The smooth results and hydration may last 5 to 7 days or even longer. We don’t believe in quick fixes, so one treatment per month is recommended for improving the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, brown spots, oily and congested skin. Continued Hydrafacial treatments and proper at home care are highly recommended to maintain skin health results.

Skin Care by Angelique currently offers three different Hydrafacial treatment options.

Learn how to transition your skincare routine from summer to fall and prepare your skin for colder temperatures.

From head to toe, your body will soon begin responding to cooler weather. What is it about fall and winter that needs us to change our ways when caring for our skin? It’s not only a change in temperature but a change in humidity and our personal habits that require new products and attention to this largest organ of the body.

While the heat of the summer months make us thirst for cool beverages (hopefully, mostly water), when things cool down it’s our skin that craves moisture. There are a number of factors that contribute to this drying of the skin. Lower humidity makes less water in the air available to our skin, so we have to compensate to keep soft and dewy. Dry winds on cooler days wick away moisture and the natural barriers our skin has to prevent drying. The changes of temperatures as we move from outdoor cold to indoor dry heat can be stressful for skin as it tries to adjust. Heavier fabrics (sweater-weather!) also pull moisture from skin and can cause some of those itchier moments we feel. And those comforting hot showers we love? They do feel wonderful, but that hot water also removes the natural oils our bodies produce to keep our skin soft.

Morning Skincare: Get Ready For The Day!

Working to hydrate our skin against all these odds calls for the right products to help, and a smart daily strategy. From wake-up to bedtime, there are times when our skin needs our attention, and we need to be ready. Let’s start with that morning shower. A great way to cleanse, polish and moisturize skin is with an oil-based scrub (sugar is gentler and best for face and décolleté, salt is coarser and best on thicker skin and rough spots) – some can be used daily and some just a couple times a week, pay attention to the label for directions. While the scrubbing particles clean dead skin away, the oil will be retained to keep your body soft. Apply a full body lotion right after shower while you are still a little damp. Your body is ready and receptive to the moisturizing ingredients that you slather on.

Mid-Day Skincare: Keep Your Skin Healthy Outside

Getting ready for the day before leaving the house should include a few essential skin care habits. Now is the season for face oils. Find a good natural oil (synthetic oil products can irritate and clog skin pores) and pat on each morning after cleansing. It will replenish your skin, but also help rebuild your natural barrier to wind and cool air that steals moisture away. While sunscreen is often synonymous with summer, it should be used year round, at least an SPF 15. The sun in winter is still sending lots of UVA and UVB rays down on you, so protection every day is important. Finish off with a lip balm that also has a light SPF (if possible). Licking dry lips only makes them worse, so stop doing that! Let a lovely moisturizing balm do the work for you.

Night-time Skincare: Time For Rest and Rejuvenation!

Your home may be the coziest place in the world, but during cooler months the heating system can make it not so comfortable for your skin. Dry air takes moisture from your skin, so it’s a great idea to invest in a humidifier to bring back some of the moist air it loved in the summer. To make it even more useful, include a few drops of essential oil to your humidifier to add a scent for relaxation (lavender), decongestion (eucalyptus), or clearer thinking (sandalwood). Before bed, cleanse your face and apply a heavier moisturizer than you were using for summer. Getting a good seven hours or more of sleep helps improve your metabolism, your brain power, and your overall skin health.

Bonus points

Look into getting a pillowcase made of silk, satin or microfiber – these fabrics help retain moisture in your skin while sleeping (less absorbent than other common linen fabrics), and create less friction, helping stave off wrinkles.

Vitamin C – add a serum with C to help battle UV light and also works to brighten and even skin tone.

Cuticle oil – not only skin, but nails experience more drying in cooler months and can become brittle. Find a cuticle oil to dab on or save money by letting your face oil do double-duty.

Collagen-infused face mask – while in the bath, add a face mask to your tub-soaking time. A 20-minute paper mask is like a spa day for your face.

During stressful times it can be tempting to occupy yourself with endless distractions, killing time until the day is over, and then waking the next morning to another stretch of time that may be harder to fill. If you’re at home these days, putting activities on a to-do list, especially self-care, will help you develop a sense of normalcy, giving your day the structure you were used to having. Experts say a to-do list helps you control your time, as well as keep distractions at bay.

Here are some recommendations for your daily to-do list:

Morning aahh! First thing in the morning, take a few minutes for a stretch –a giant yawn, some yoga postures, or maybe just a few twists in the comfort of your bed. Breathe deeply during this brief session, and your body will be more eager to get going for the day ahead.

Beauty Time. Even if you’re not going anywhere today, take a few extra minutes to touch up where you can. Pat on an eye crème to refresh after sleep, style your hair like you have an appointment, and find some special accessory like a necklace or a scarf to add some flair.

What to do? Make a list of the things you need and want to accomplish in the day. Work projects, online food ordering, connect with family members living at a distance, writing a card for the next holiday, birthday or anniversary. Write it down–make it a manageable list, so you’re not disappointed if you don’t get to everything–and check off the tasks as you finish them.

Happy Time. Be sure to include things that make you happy. This could be spending time on a creative project, taking the time to make a nice meal, or going for a walk with your dog. Your to-do list should always have some things that bring you joy.

Appreciation Time. Even if it’s just a short list of 3 things you are grateful for, write them down. Take a few minutes to consider what you appreciate in your world, it may be a person, or something you saw in nature today, or a reflection on some positive idea you had or heard about.some

Bath Time. The benefits of a warm bath are undeniable. The science says it increases your serotonin (feel good hormone) levels, blood and oxygen flow, and helps calm your nervous system, relieving stress and anxiety. That sounds perfect!

Relaxation. Down time and relaxation are not created equal. Real relaxation means spending some deliberate slowing down and recharging. Deep breathing, meditation, journaling the day’s thoughts, and a slow mindful cup of tea are some great ways to do just that. True relaxation improves mood and quality of sleep and lowers blood pressure and chronic pain. All good things. daily to

Here is a simple step-by-step tutorial for doing an at-home facial. All you need are a handful of products, which you already own, or can make yourself!

Before you begin: dampen a couple of wash cloths or hand towels, fold in half or into thirds depending on the size you’re using, and roll them up. Place the rolled towels onto a microwave-safe plate and heat them in the microwave for 30 second integrals, turning them over periodically, until they are hot to the touch. Remove the plate from the microwave and place a dry towel over top to help keep in the heat. Have these rolled towels handy wherever you plan to carry out your facial.

You may also choose to steep two chamomile tea bags as you prepare the towels, which you can then drain and use during the mask step of your facial. See below.

If you own a fan brush or a foundation brush, be sure to wash this thoroughly before beginning so you can use it to apply product to your face. It does not need to be fully dry to use during your facial. No brush? No problem! Fingertips work just fine!

One more thing: Remove makeup before washing your face so that your skin has no barrier between it and all of the wonderful ingredients in your cleanser. You can choose to use micellar water, a makeup melting balm, a microfiber cloth, or even a plant-based oil and a wash cloth to break down your makeup and remove it from the skin.

Now with everything prepped, it’s time to begin!

Start with a cleanser. Pick your favorite, or if you have multiple products from the same brand, try and stick with those as they will work together more effectively than using products from several different lines. Dampen your face at the sink, and if your product lathers, dispense about a nickel-size of it into the palm of your hand and lather it lightly. Massage the cleanser into your skin for 90 seconds, taking it down your neck about a third of the way to reduce dripping. Rinse with water at the sink, and pat dry with a hand towel.

Optional: use a cotton ball or cotton pad lightly soaked in toner or witch hazel to balance the pH of your skin and prepare it for optimal absorption of products. Sweep the cotton ball all over the face and neck, and then pat the product into the skin with your fingertips.

Next, make your own gentle facial scrub or use your favorite facial exfoliating product. (For a bonus recipe on DIY facial scrub, see below!) Dispense another nickel-size amount of product onto your fingertips, rub your fingers lightly together to distribute onto both hands, and then massage the exfoliant into the skin for two minutes, taking it down the neck about a third of the way to make clean up easier. Use gentle, circular motions, starting at the forehead and working your way down the face and neck. This is a great time to sing along to your favorite song as you scrub, and those two minutes will fly by! Rinse at the sink using hands or a wash cloth to assist in removal of product.

Optional: use a cotton ball or cotton pad lightly soaked in toner or witch hazel to balance the pH of your skin and prepare it for optimal absorption of products. Sweep the cotton ball all over the face and neck, and then pat the product into the skin with your fingertips.

Next, select the facial mask of your choice or check out our suggested recipes below for using your own DIY mask! If using a sheet mask, follow the instructions on the back of the packet. If using a loose mask, use your fingertips or a fan brush or foundation brush to apply. Pro Tip: apply your mask to one half of your face at a time, beginning at the forehead and working your way down to the neck. This application technique will ensure more even coverage of your mask.

Once you are satisfied with your mask coverage, you will then take one of your steamed towels, unfold it and test its temperature on your wrist, making sure it’s not too hot. Drape the warm towel over your face while you sit back and relax for 10 minutes. The warm towel will not only help open pores so they receive all the benefits of the mask, but it will also help to keep the mask soft so it’s easier to remove. Pro Tip: Use your two tea bags and place them over your eyes (and underneath the warm towel) as you let the mask sit. This makes for a wonderfully soothing eye treatment!

After 10 minutes, remove the mask using the warm damp towels you prepared. If necessary, remove any stubborn bits of mask at the sink with water. Pat your skin dry using a dry hand towel.

Optional: use a cotton ball or cotton pad lightly soaked in toner or witch hazel to balance the pH of your skin and prepare it for optimal absorption of products. Sweep the cotton ball all over the face and neck, and then pat the product into the skin with your fingertips.

Optional: use a serum of your choice and apply a dime-sized amount all over the face and neck with light, sweeping motions. Pat the product into the skin with your fingertips until it is absorbed.

Finally, use a moisturizer of your choice and apply a nickel-sized amount all over the face and neck with gentle, circular motions. Pat the product into the skin with your fingertips until you feel it is well-absorbed.

Now that your skin is cleansed, exfoliated, purified, and moisturized – you’re ready to face the day with confidence! Enjoy a facial like this as often as once or twice a week, depending on your individual needs.

Pro Tip: with your skin in such great condition, skip the makeup for a day or two and savor the results for even longer. It’s the perfect time to let your skin breathe!

DIY Scrubs

Enzymatic Scrub (not for sensitive skin)

1/4 cup diced papaya (blended)

1 tsp pineapple juice (not sweetened)

1 tsp honey (raw, unfiltered is best)

2-3 tbsp of brown sugar

Brightening Scrub (not for sensitive skin)

2 tsp cocoa (not sweetened)

1 tbsp coffee grounds

2 tbsp plain yogurt

Hydrating Scrub

1 tbsp oatmeal (blended to a course powder)

1 tbsp plain yogurt

1 tbsp milk (acidophilus if on hand)

2 tsp almond oil (or coconut or jojoba)

1-2 tbsp brown or white sugar

DIY Face Masks

For All Skin Types to Achieve a Healthy Glow:

Mash one-half of a banana in a bowl.

Mix in a tablespoon of orange juice and a tablespoon of honey (raw or Manuka).

Apply the mask to your face (lumps are totally fine!)

Soothing and Skin-Tightening:

Combine one egg yolk, one tablespoon of honey, and one tablespoon of olive oil with half a cup of oatmeal.

Stir well, then apply it to your face.

Be sure your drain is protected from oatmeal drips!

Why should you see an esthetician?

Esthetics is the application of various treatments to the skin, to maintain its health and vitality. Estheticians are trained in skin wellness, helping their clients balance oil and moisture content and achieve a healthy, youthful complexion. As well as various facial treatments (described in more detail below), they commonly also perform body treatments such as salt or sugar scrubs, moisturizing or slenderizing body wraps, hair removal techniques such as waxing or threading, and hand/foot treatments to rejuvenate the skin.

A variety of treatments and products are used to protect skin from environmental hazards and combat fine lines, wrinkles, and a dull, uneven skin tone. Estheticians are also skilled in managing conditions such as acne, rosacea, eczema, and dry skin, to name just a few. And finally, skin care treatments are wonderfully relaxing and rejuvenating. If smooth, healthy skin is your goal, visiting a skin care professional can benefit you.

What’s the difference between dermatology, cosmetology, and esthetics?

Dermatology is a branch of the medical profession, practiced by licensed physicians who specialize in disorders of the skin. Esthetic practice specifically excludes diagnosis, prescription, or any other service, procedure, or therapy that requires a medical license. If you’re being treated by a dermatologist, your esthetician can provide complementary and support therapies. In addition, estheticians are trained to recognize early signs of many medical conditions affecting the skin, and will refer you to a dermatologist in such a case.

Cosmetology is the study of beauty treatments including nail care, hair care and styling, makeup application, skin care and more. Esthetics is one branch of cosmetology; some estheticians work in other branches of cosmetology in addition to their skin care practice.

Skincare techniques and products

Techniques used by estheticians include facial steaming, wrapping, exfoliation, waxing, pore cleansing, extraction, and chemical peels. Creams, lotions, wraps, clay or gel masks, and salt scrubs are used. Machines may also be used to help deliver high-tech services.

Some common therapies:

Chemical peel: An exfoliation process, very effective in treating a large range of skin concerns such as aging, sun damage, acne, mild scarring, improving overall skin brightness and evening skin tone. Peels can be light, moderate or deep. Light peels require no down time from work or normal activities. Moderate peels may require a day or two of down time, and deep peels can require a week or more to allow the skin to fully heal. Estheticians who are not working in a medical setting perform light to moderate peels only. Deep peels are performed by a physican, or under a physician’s supervision, for your safety.

Exfoliation: The removal of dead skin cells manually (scrubbing, brushing, or using a system such as microdermabrasion), with a chemical peel (a product that causes dead skin cells to shed) or with an enzymatic product that digests dead skin cells.

Extraction: This is the process of deep cleansing the pores, either manually (using gloved hands and cotton or tissue around the fingers, with gentle pressure to remove the impacted pore) or using a metal extraction implement designed to clear blocked pores. This can also include the use of a lancet (a small sharp blade to lift the dead cells of the skin prior to extraction).

Facial: A facial is the most popular treatment performed by estheticians. It is a good way for your therapist to get a good understanding of your skin prior to suggesting more aggressive treatments. A facial generally includes makeup removal and skin cleansing, exfoliation by mechanical, enzymatic or chemical means, steaming, extractions, facial massage, a treatment mask, serum/moisturizer and sunblock. For most people, facials can be scheduled every four weeks, although your therapist may recommend a different schedule based on your individual needs.

Microdermabrasion: The process of resurfacing the skin using a machine that sands the skin’s epidermal (outer) layer, using either a wand tipped with crushed diamonds, or a spray of special crystals which are then suctioned back up along with the dead skin cells. It can be very helpful in improving skin texture, fine lines and the effectiveness of home care product penetration.

Waxing: Waxing removes unwanted hair at the root. There are two different types of waxes: hard and soft. Soft wax is applied warm to the skin in a thin layer in the direction of hair growth. Cloth strips are then applied to the warm wax, rubbed in the direction of hair growth, and quickly pulled off in the opposite direction. This method is best used on larger areas of the body such as the legs, back or chest. Hard wax is used without cloth strips. It is applied warm, in a layer about the thickness of a nickel, allowed to dry and then removed quickly in the opposite direction of hair growth. Hard wax is less irritating to sensitive skin and is excellent for the bikini, underarm and facial areas.

Visiting an esthetician

It is always a good idea to schedule a consultation appointment prior to your first treatment, especially if you are new to esthetic treatments. This gives you and your therapist a chance to discuss your goals and expectations for the first visit, and long term goals for the future. During a consultation, your therapist will go over an extensive intake form, and most likely do a cleansing of the skin followed by a detailed skin analysis. This will give your therapist the information she/he needs to create an individualized treatment plan, both for a series of professional treatments and recommendations for products you can use at home.

What about home care?

Much of the success of maintaining a visible improvement after treatment depends on consistent, correct home care. Your esthetician is trained to select the products that will most benefit your skin, and to advise you on how to maintain your professional results between visits. Like medical or dental care, following the right daily regimen at home is essential if you are to get the most out of your visits to a professional.

Your esthetician

Your skin care treatments should be provided by a properly trained professional. Don’t hesitate to ask your skin care therapist about her background, training, and experience—especially as it relates to the treatment you are considering. Your therapist is a professional member of Associated Skin Care Professionals. Our members have been validated as meeting their state’s licensing credentials and/or core training requirements, and agree to follow a code of ethics which ensures you’ll be treated responsibly and with the utmost respect. ASCP also provides its members with comprehensive resources that allow them to keep up with changing trends, making certain you’ll receive the most up-to-date therapies available.
